WWAN module replacement¶
The Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) module provides access to the cellular network. Different modules are needed for different geographical regions, so you may find it necessary to replace the current module with another one that is approved for use with the Librem 5 when you travel between regions with different regulations.
Note
The user is responsible for ensuring that any changes or modifications they make to their phone are compliant with government regulations on radio operation and emissions in their geographical region.
Materials¶
1 x #0 Phillips-head screwdriver
1 x precision tweezers (optional)
1 x plastic spudger (optional)
Access the module¶
Ensure that the device is fully powered off.
Disconnect the device from any connected USB power source.
Remove the rear cover of the device to access the WWAN module compartment.
Use a small Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the protective plate covering the WWAN and WLAN/Bluetooth modules.
Remove the battery before proceeding.
The WWAN module is located below the rear camera.¶
Replace the module¶
Remove the screw located near the top edge of the compartment and WWAN module. This will release a T-shaped metal retaining bracket.

Note the placement of the “auxillary” and “main” U.FL sockets indicated by the corresponding red markers on the module label. They must later be reconnected in the same orientation.
Use tweezers to disconnect the two RF cables from the WWAN module by gently pulling the U.FL connectors outward from the circuit board.
Caution
U.FL connectors are delicate. They are only rated for approximately 10 duty cycles. Avoid handling these connectors whenever possible.

Remove the WWAN module from the socket and replace it with a new module.
Securely connect the RF cables into the module in the same positions as they were removed.
Fasten the T-bracket into place with the screw.
Position the protective rear plate over the WWAN and WLAN/Bluetooth modules and gently fasten the screws back into place.
Insert the battery back into the battery compartment.
Close the rear cover¶
Position the rear cover over the back of the device.
Gently press straight down around the edges until the rear cover snaps into place.
